Netball legend Mary Waya will tomorrow start a countrywide talent search through her Mary Waya Netball Academy, which recently received a year-long K5 million boost from Old Mutual Malawi.

The former Malawi Queens star launched her netball clinics at Chapananga in Chikhwawa on December 2 to tap hidden talent from the rural areas and promote physical, mental and spiritual growth among the country’s young girls.

Waya told The Nation yesterday that between this month and May, she will hold clinics in Mwanza and Neno in the South, Mangochi and Balaka in the Eastern Region, Kasungu and Salima in the Centre and Karonga in the North.

She said her target are girls aged between 11 and 17 years.

Waya said the best 16 athletes from the clinics will in August have a joint camp at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) where prominent clubs in the country will have a chance to scout for players to beef up their squads.

“I will have my first assignment at Santhe Teachers Development Centre in Kasungu this Saturday and Sunday before going to Salima on January 25. Our mission is to help young girls achieve greatness through netball,” said Waya.

She said in all her clinics, she will be accompanied by some former and current national netball team players as well as up-and-coming netballers to inspire other girls.

In Kasungu, she said she will be assisted by Civonets’ Jane Chimaliro and up-and-coming star Tapiwa Banda.
